Abuelo Jaime Muriel

Colombian Taita, Spiritual Guide and Ancestral Healer, he has been walking on Ayahuasca’s sacred journey for more than 20 years in Colombia, Mexico & the USA.

He prepares his own sacred medicine (Yagé) in Putumayo, Amazonas, honoring his origins, teachings & ancestors. The title “Taita” is an honorific used for spiritual leaders and healers who are revered for their deep knowledge of indigenous culture and sacred plant medicines like Yagé, also known as Ayahuasca. Taitas from the Putumayo region guide others through transformative experiences, blending ancient customs with a profound understanding of nature.

Abuelo Jaime practices in the tradition of the Inga. The Inga people are an indigenous ethnic group native to portions of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, with a claimed historical relationship with the Incas.

Yagé (Ayahuasca)

The indigenous in the area of Mocoa belong to the Pastos or Inga tribes and they have an ancient relationship with Yage or Ayahusca.

Yagé (pronounced ya-hay) is a vine that grows in these areas and when combined with two other local plants - chancruna and changropanga - produces a drink that causes visions. The active ingredient DMT (dimethyltriptamine) is naturally produced by the pineal gland in the human brain at the times of birth and death. It is known as the “spirit molecule.” The locals have used the plant for centuries to cure emotional disorders and for spiritual guidance.

To prepare this sacred brew, the vine is hit with a machete a few hundred times to tenderize it and then boiled together with the other two plants. Only a qualified shaman knows how to correctly make the potion and what's the proper dosage.

It was in Lake Atitlan, where he first connected with Ayahuasca with a Huni Kuin chief from the Brazilian Amazon. Since then Joey has been assisting in sacred plant medicine ceremony, organizing, translating & supporting with music.

Joey serves as the Wisdom Keeper lead for Lightning In a Bottle music festival, where he brings elders from Apache, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Hawai’i & India to share their stories, wisdom, music and mission with festival goers.

This is Joey’s second retreat to Colombia, having brought a group in December 2024 to stay with the Arhuaco Mamos in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains.

Energetic care:

It is important to take care of the energies you surround yourself with leading up to ceremony. It is best to maintain a peaceful vibration as much as you can. Stay away from destructive or conflictual conversations, negative/violent movies or programs etc, and anything that contaminates your thoughts.

During the diet, try to give yourself a moment each day (5-15 min) to be alone, take deep breaths and feel your body, this is a good time to remember your intention.

Remember that during the ceremony you'll connect with the divinity that dwells within!

You will be able to connect with the medicine with much more clarity and benefit.

How should we prepare?

Dieta:

Completely avoid the following: red meat, dairy, seafood, alcohol, Marijuana, caffeine, processed/junk foods, fried foods, sugary foods, heavily spiced foods, spicy/hot foods, and soft drinks.
